Does EMDR therapy work?

August 7, 2023

Recently, I had a client that experienced EMDR in the past and now was seeking to do it again. I am speaking about a young artist whom recently returned to therapy, being unsatisfied and feeling stuck in her life with her relationship and with her career. Having done EMDR in the past, it was easy to get right into it and the client worked on her specific goals over a two-month period. After completion she returned to her home with more clarity and confidence, healing some of her childhood experiences that kept her feeling unworthy, and stuck.

Does EMDR therapy really work?

Here are 7 key points explaining the difference EMDR therapy can make:

1. Focused Healing: EMDR is designed to address specific issues and goals that clients bring to therapy. In your client's case, she was able to target and work through her feelings of unworthiness and being stuck, both in her personal life and her career.

2. Swift Progress: The fact that your client experienced noticeable improvements over a relatively short period of two months demonstrates the efficiency of EMDR therapy. It allows individuals to make significant progress in a shorter span of time compared to some other therapeutic approaches.

3.Reprocessing Traumatic Memories: EMDR helps individuals reprocess traumatic memories and experiences, allowing them to integrate these memories into their life story in a healthier way. This reprocessing can lead to reduced emotional distress and a clearer perspective on one's life and relationships.

4.Enhanced Confidence and Clarity: Your client's increased clarity and confidence post-EMDR therapy are indications of how EMDR can help individuals overcome self-doubt, negative beliefs, and emotional obstacles that were holding them back.

5. Building Resilience: EMDR therapy doesn't just alleviate symptoms; it also helps individuals develop resilience and coping skills, which are valuable tools for navigating future challenges.

6. Personal Empowerment: The success your client experienced with EMDR therapy highlights how this approach empowers individuals to take an active role in their healing journey. It's not a passive process but rather one where the client is actively engaged in processing and transforming their thoughts and emotions.

7. Continued Progress:  For individuals who have already experienced EMDR therapy in the past, like this client above, returning for additional sessions can provide an opportunity for further growth and healing. It's a testament to the ongoing benefits of this therapeutic approach.

It’s important to acknowledge that everyone's journey is unique. Some individuals might experience profound changes after a few sessions, while others might need more time.

Here are a couple of videos that I thought would help. Prince Harry is a big fan of EMDR therapy and shared his experience recently on Good Morning America.

Also, the second video is from a young woman that was a skeptic and she shares her experience.
