1. Stretch your body. Join a yoga class or find a YouTubevideo that shows you how to gently stretch your body. Stretching your body increases serotonin levels, (i.e., the hormone that helps stabilize our mood, reduce stress, and overall makes us feel good) and releases mental stress with muscle relaxation.
2. Do 2 rounds of Acupressure point tapping. This technique stimulates acupressure points by tapping them with your fingers and is very powerful when combined with the breath. This is a simplified version of what is known as EFT tapping. The focus is on tapping acupressure points and breathing. Click here for a video.
3. Shake it out! Firmly plant your feet on the ground, make sure there is ample space around you, close your eyes and shake your body to your favorite tune. Drumming music is great for this or your favorite dance song. Dancing releases endorphins (the happy hormones), gets your cardio-vascular system pumping, and releases stress to rebalance your exhausted adrenals (your fight-flight glands that pump far too much stress-producing cortisol leaving you like a walking shell of a person). 4. Ask for a new perspective. Seek out a therapist, or a wise friend, ask them to share their point of view on your current anxiety producing thought.
5. Lastly, get some sun. Sun avoidance and lower vitamin D intake are associated with higher levels of anxiety. Make sure to check your Vitamin D levels at your yearly checkup, spend 10-30 min of midday sun a day.
